All Swiss Online Casinos
In fact, it wasn’t that long ago (January 2019, to be precise) when the new → Money Gaming Act (Fedlex, 01.01.2021) came into force in Switzerland. It allows all casinos in Switzerland to make their offerings available online as well. However, it is not enough to simply be a licensed casino. This is because the → law (Federal Gaming Commission, 21.08.2018) stipulates that online casinos Switzerland need an additional license if they want to go online. This extension of the already existing concession is awarded by the Federal Council. And if there isn’t one yet, getting there isn’t so easy.
In addition, the providers still need a license for the operation of an online casino from the Swiss Federal Gaming Commission – for each individual game offered.
Casino licenses for all online casinos Switzerland
All Swiss online casinos have one thing in common: they offer excitement and entertainment at the highest level. But behind a simple-looking website is an enormous amount of work. Whether → online or land-based (Swiss Federal Gaming Commission, 2019) – anyone wishing to operate a casino first needs a license to do so.
Besides, as a future operator of an online casino in Switzerland, you have to deal with completely different challenges. Which software should it be, which games should be offered? And who helps with legal matters? Who will take over the financial infrastructure? In addition, one of the absolute requirements for an online casino in Switzerland is also an existing land casino.
All of the currently upstanding and valid casino licenses in Switzerland expire at the end of 2024, and each casino can submit an application for renewal as the expiration date approaches. This also affects all Swiss online casinos. But this is where the real challenge begins, because the → ESBK (Swiss Federal Gaming Board, 2024) reviews every single renewal application.
Online vs. offline – a difference like day and night
The differences between land-based casinos and online providers are immense and can even be grouped into different categories. On the one hand, there are the differences from the guests’ point of view, who do not even have to leave their own four walls for an online casino, which promises little effort.
Besides, you don’t get a casino bonus at “real” casinos. This is a welcome gift that awaits you as a new player. The online casino offers special treats to inspire you. Take a look here for our carefully selected offers of the best casino bonus in Switzerland.
On the other hand, there is the perspective of the employees: While employees of a land-based casino are always in the middle of the action, employees for all Swiss online casinos usually only work in front of the camera.
And finally, there is the perspective of the online casino operator. Those people and groups of people who take on all the technical, organizational and legal effort to offer their guests gaming pleasure from home as well.
Gambling and financial laws are not the only laws for all Swiss online casinos. Online also come guidelines in relation to the
→ software use (World Count of Gaming Machines, 2019), the design of the website, and – depending on the content – also add media laws. Next are abusive use from an unlicensed country and ways to largely eliminate illegal participation in gambling.
So, as long as you play in one of the best casinos Switzerland, online is definitely preferable for most players.
Statistics: Land-based casinos in Switzerland
Currently, 21 land-based casinos in Switzerland have a valid license. In this country, a distinction is made between a type A concession and a type B concession, the main differences being the limited stake and a potential cantonal levy on the respective gross gaming revenue. However, online games are exempt from these levies.
Licensed casinos include mainly the branches in the larger and sometimes world-famous cities such as St. Gallen, Zurich, Lugano, Bern, Basel and Baden (all A-licensed), but also no direct tourist metropolises such as Davos, Schaffhausen, Meyrin or Mendrisio. Each of these licensed casinos is allowed to run an online casino.

The supreme body: The Federal Gaming Commission
In Switzerland, the SFGB is responsible for monitoring compliance with all legal provisions relating to casinos and gambling. It carries out regular controls in casinos, including inspections regarding money laundering and terrorist financing.
In addition, the SFGB is interested in the local security measures and regulations, their compliance and the measures taken by the casino to protect players. The monitoring and prosecution of illegal gambling and the regulation of casino levies are also within its remit.
Opinions, experiences and news about all Swiss online casinos
Actual experience reports and opinions expressed by casino guests are often highly emotionally charged and can only be taken seriously to a limited extent. The problem with most of the experience reports is that the people involved ended the game with a loss, but expected a win beforehand, which was taken for granted.
By the way, few personal experience reports are truly factual and objective. Therefore, comparison portals such as Bestecasinosschweiz.ch, where all Swiss online casinos are tested, are recommended. Above all, the official permission to advertise (this was originally prohibited) for all online casinos in Switzerland → since 2019 (Annual Report 2019 / Swiss Casino Association, 2019) ensured that you can now gamble online with a clear conscience.
